Targeting youth across a range of age groups, the Iraqi Red Crescent Society organised an awareness campaign about the risks associated with narcotics and sports stimulants in the governorates of Nineveh, Diyala, and Karbala.
The campaign schedule comprised field meetings and lectures, as well as the distribution of awareness posters and folders to youth groups at sports centres and their meetings in cafes and common areas by the health teams of the society.
The lectures covered a wide range of significant subjects, chief among them the effects of drug and psychotropic substance addiction on an individual’s physical and mental well-being. It results in a loss of concentration and behavioural control, which exacerbates anxiety, despair, and a sense of psychological persecution.
It was also noted that, in addition to its significant negative effects on the economy (since the addict is unproductive, jobless, and a burden on his family and society), its social effects on the individual and society were reflected in criminal activity, family breakdown, and the spread of moral corruption.
In order to educate young athletes about the risks associated with stimulants, their nature of use, their impact on their health, and the deaths that can result from overuse, the campaign included productive and in-depth talks with them. They also learnt about the many kinds of nutritional supplements and how important it is to utilise them in accordance with medical advice.
