Iraqi Red Crescent Launches Climate Change Risk Assessment Program in Iraq.

The impacts of climate change are expected to intensify, leading to more frequent and severe weather events such as droughts, heatwaves, and floods. These phenomena pose significant threats to food security, human health, and the environment, and may also result in large-scale forced displacement.
In an effort to assess the impact of climate change on communities and identify mitigation strategies, the Iraqi Red Crescent Society (IRCS), in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), has launched the Climate Change Risk Assessment Program across all governorates of Iraq.
Mr.Nawar Abdul Qader, the director of Water and Sanitation department at the Iraqi Red Crescent, stated: “The Iraqi Red Crescent Society has formed a climate action team consisting of 45 members from the IRCS staff, who have been trained on the methodologies and mechanisms required for conducting the assessment.”

“The assessment process will be participatory in nature through holding workshops with relevant authorities in the governorates, including departments of technical services, planning, water resources, and health.”, Nawar added.
Abdul Qader has also confirmed that the team will organize workshops for the local community to identify the risks facing each area, prioritize the most critical ones, and propose appropriate response measures.
Abdul Qader has pointed out that the assessment reports will be central to planning all future IRCS activities aimed at reducing climate change risks. These activities will be carried out in collaboration with technical departments and supporting entities, it is worth noting that the Iraqi Red Crescent Society has been recognized as one of the Climate Action Champions.
