Iraqi Red Crescent Trains Volunteers in Gender-Based Violence Response Using Virtual Reality in Baghdad

Report by: Hassan Hamza

The Iraqi Red Crescent Society (IRCS) has conducted a specialized training workshop for its volunteers, aimed at strengthening their capacity to respond to gender-based violence (GBV) survivors. For the first time in its training programs, the IRCS has utilized virtual reality (VR) simulation technology, with support from the Danish and British Red Cross, as part of its commitment to adopting modern training methods that realistically simulate scenarios and develop volunteers’ skills in an interactive and impactful way.

The participants engaged in an immersive VR experience, allowing them to simulate real-life GBV situations and learn how to provide psychosocial support and respond to survivors with sensitivity and care.

The workshop coordinators emphasized that this technology enhances the effectiveness of humanitarian response by promoting empathy and increasing awareness of the social and cultural contexts surrounding gender-based violence, this ensures that support is delivered in a safe, respectful, and informed manner.

The above – mentioned initiative is part of the IRCS ongoing efforts to build the abilities of its volunteers and integrate innovative technologies into humanitarian work, ensuring a more effective and conscious response to the needs of vulnerable populations.
