Proactive Measures to Combat Climate Change: Iraqi Red Crescent Holds Meeting to Launch “Building Resilience in Iraq” Project.
In a significant step toward addressing escalating environmental challenges, the Iraqi Red Crescent Society (IRCS), in collaboration with the Danish Red Cross, held a meeting at its headquarters in Baghdad to launch the project titled “Building Resilience and Taking Proactive Measures to Confront Climate Change in Iraq.”
The participants from the IRCS branches in Dhi Qar and Basra, along with representatives from the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, discussed the project’s key components and objectives, the meeting also reviewed the targeted groups and the governorates to be included. Emphasis was placed on the core strategies and plans to be implemented, as well as the mechanisms necessary for execution and ensuring the project’s ongoing effectiveness.
The project, supported by the Danish Red Cross, adopts a series of proactive measures aimed at enhancing resilience against climate change, its primary goal is to mitigate the impacts of climate change on Iraqi communities, particularly in the most affected regions such as Basra and Dhi Qar governorates.
The attendees examined the main challenges and potential obstacles anticipated during the implementation of the project, drawing on past experiences. They also proposed a range of recommendations and future steps to strengthen the effectiveness of the project on the ground.
It was emphasized that the majority of current projects being implemented by the IRCS in cooperation with its partners are closely linked to climate change. This underscores the importance of the issue within the broader context of relief and development efforts in Iraq. The project represents a major step toward enhancing national capacity to adapt to climate-related challenges and reaffirms the commitment of the IRCS and international partners to providing sustainable solutions that support Iraqi communities in facing the consequences of climate change.
