Drinking water shortages in several regions in Diyalah. The reasons for the scarcity of water are ascribed to a lack of rainfall, a loss of water storage in lakes, and the drying of rivers that feed the water purification plant.
To assist the local community, alleviate their suffering, and supply safe drinking water, the Iraqi Red Crescent, with the support of the International Federation, started a project to dig wells and erect desalination plants (RO) as part of the drought relief effort.
According to Mr. Nawar Abdel Qader, director of the Iraqi Red Crescent’s Sanitation and Construction Department, “A station has been erected in the Imam Habash area, which contains (8) villages south of the Buhraz district. Another station has been erected in the Mayah villages, as well as digging a well there.
“The capacity of each station is 2 cubic meters per hour, and the number of beneficiaries from Buhraz station is 3400 people, while Al-Muqdadiyah station is 3000 people, noting that the last station gives its services to (7) villages,” he stated.
Abdul Qader has also claimed that the operations of installing stations and digging wells will be accompanied by awareness initiatives in these areas to raise knowledge of the hazards of drought.
